Apart from the fact that the work is copyrighted even when there's no explicit copyright sign...
I don't think it is very much about fear of the comic being stolen. It's more about the self-esteem, a certain feel of proudness, oh my god - that copyright sign looks so important, it's one of those things that professional artists put on their comics.
Now you're a step closer to professionals, if not for quality of the comic, then for having a copyright note at the bottom!
